SACD
Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) was created by Sony and Philips as a higher-quality alternative to CD. It utilises DSD (Direct Stream
Digital) encoding and can deliver a frequency response almost five times greater than that of normal CD, along with a dynamic range of
120dB compared to that of CD at 96dB. Discs can be encoded with a multichannel 5.1 mix or in regular stereo and some hybrid discs, containing
both a CD and SACD layer, can be played in ordinary CD players. SACD-only discs are only compatible with players that can decode SACD - they
will not play in an ordinary CD player. It is often billed as a rival to DVD Audio, though many players will decode both formats.

Toroidal Transformers
Usually found in higher-end equipment, these transformers are designed around a ring-shaped core, improving efficiency by reducing
magnetic resistance. Effectively, a toroidal transformer helps to reduce the
transference of unwanted noise to the audio circuitry
by retaining the interference in the transformer core. Coils are wound around the surface of the core which minimises the length of
wire needed whilst at the same time screening the core’s magnetic field to reduce electromagnetic interference. These transformers can
also be more efficient than their cheaper counterparts. They produce less mechanical hum and a lower exterior magnetic field,
and have low off-load losses so they are efficient even in standby.
