Blu-Ray disc player with SACD and DVD-Audio playback More Info...
Blu-Ray disc player with SACD and DVD-Audio playback

SACD
Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) was created by Sony and Philips as a higher-quality alternative to CD. It utilises DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoding and can deliver a frequency response almost five times greater than that of normal CD, along with a dynamic range of 120dB compared to that of CD at 96dB. Discs can be encoded with a multichannel 5.1 mix or in regular stereo and some hybrid discs, containing both a CD and SACD layer, can be played in ordinary CD players. SACD-only discs are only compatible with players that can decode SACD - they will not play in an ordinary CD player. It is often billed as a rival to DVD Audio, though many players will decode both formats.

DVD Audio
DVD-Audio (DVD-A) is a high quality multi channel sound format based around the DVD format. DVD-Audio discs can have high quality multi channel sound with sampling frequencies up to 192kHz compared to 44.1kHz of regular CDs. Most DVD audio discs can be played back in existing DVD players but cannot take advantage of the high quality uncompressed 24-bit, 192kHz sound quality unless they are "DVD-Audio" compliant. Playback on a non-DVD-Audio-compliant DVD player is in compressed Dolby Digital. It is often billed as a rival to Super Audio CD (SACD), though many players will decode both formats.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) v1.4
The HDMI v1.4 connections on the MARANTZ UD-7006 allows for the transmission of 1080p 3D content between a 3D-compatible Blu-Ray Disc player and a 3D HD display. It also brings in an audio return channel allowing for two-way transmission of audio. This allows your television, for example, to send audio back from its integrated tuner to the receiver, solving the problem of having to run more than one cable between your A/V receiver and TV.
Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD bitstream output More Info...
Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD bitstream output

Dolby TrueHD
The MARANTZ UD7006 has Dolby TrueHD which is a next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. It delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at a bit rate of up to 18 Mbps. It also supports up to 8 full-range channels of 24-bit/96 kHz audio (although TrueHD can support more than 8 channels, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray standards limit it to 8) and extensive metadata including dialogue normalization and dynamic range control all through an HDMI connection. Dolby TrueHD is compatible with existing and future AV amplifiers/receivers.

Dolby Digital Plus
The MARANTZ UD-7006 has Dolby Digital Plus decoding. Dolby Digital Plusis a next-generation audio technology for all high-definition programming and media. Dolby Digital Plus was designed for the delivery formats of the future, but remains fully compatible with all current AV amplifier/receivers. Dolby Digital Plus is capable of supporting data rates of up to 6Mbps and having a bit rate performance of at least 3Mbps on Blu-ray.

DTS-HD
The MARANTZ UD-7006 has DTS-HD which has been selected as an optional audio technology for Blu-Ray Disc and HD-DVD. DTS-HD is a set of extensions to DTS' Coherent Acoustics audio coding system which encompasses DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES 6.1 discrete, DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24. As a mandatory technology in the next generation standards, a DTS decoder will be built into every HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc player. A single DTS-HD data stream on a disc can carry everything from standard DTS 5.1 playable on virtually all existing 280 million plus DTS decoders, all the way to lossless for next-generation systems.
BD-Video Final Standard Profile 2.0 containing dual audio/video decoders enabling simultaneous playback of a secondary audio/video track (Picture-in-Picture functions or interactive audio/commentary)
Ethernet port for video, audio and photo streaming across your home network, along with BD-Live content and firmware updates
YouTube “Leanback” functions allow you to easily access thousands of videos online (via software update)

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)
DLNA is an agreed standard for sharing media from your computer across your home network to devices like this. This can be digital photos, music and videos. Not all devices are capable of playing back all media, some only playback audio.
192kHz/32-bit DAC More Info...
192kHz/32-bit DAC

Digital to analogue converter (DAC)
Converts the digital data signal into analogue signal that can be amplified and reproduced using speakers or headphones so that our ears can hear it. In the case of video the data is converted into a video signal that can be reproduced by a display device so that we can see it. Once data is converted to an analogue signal it then can degrade and lose its quality every step of the way. Most modern equipment is designed to keep data in the digital (Lossless) domain as long as possible. In an ideal world data would be kept digital right up until the point that you see or hear it avoiding degradation.

7.1 analogue multichannel output More Info...
7.1 analogue multichannel output
The 7.1 output allows you to utilise the analogue outputs for analogue multichannel SACD playback, or alternatively you can set the player to decode and output the multichannel formats found on Blu-Ray discs.
Video upscaling to 1080p via Anchor Bay ABT2015 video processing More Info...
Video upscaling to 1080p via Anchor Bay ABT2015 video processing
Video Upscaling
Video content comes in many different shapes and sizes. A DVD, for example, could come in a 4:3 aspect at 480p whilst a Blu-ray or computer game may come in a 16:9 aspect at 1080i. Thse signals must first be processed by either an A/V receiver or by your television in order to display correctly. In the first instance, when upscaling from 480p to 1080p, an algorithm is used to interpolate the original pixels. The end result is a largely new frame; many of the pixels displayed are an average of those around them. In the second instance, from 1080i to 1080p, the image is simply deinterlaced. This process precedes any upscaling, so if you upscale from 480i to 1080p, it will first be deinterlaced before being upscaled.
