THX Select 2 Plus
THX certified products are sent to the THX test facility for rigorous testing. Often this will mean revisions must be made to the design or components used in order to pass the tests. THX certified products show that exact standards set by THX have been met. Select2 Plus is given to products that are ideally designed for medium sized rooms (approx. 2000 cubic feet) with a 10 foot viewing distance from the screen.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) v1.4
The HDMI v1.4 connections on the ONKYO TX-NR717 allows for the transmission of 1080p 3D content between a 3D-compatible Blu-Ray Disc player and a 3D HD display. It also brings in an audio return channel allowing for two-way transmission of audio. This allows your television, for example, to send audio back from its integrated tuner to the receiver, solving the problem of having to run more than one cable between your A/V receiver and TV.
Audio return channel over HDMI More Info...
Audio return channel over HDMI
Audio Return Channel
Included in the specifications of HDMI v1.4, ARC (Audio Return Channel) allows an audio signal to be sent from the TV as well a video signal is sent towards it. In short, this eliminates the need to connect any extra cables (SPDIF or analogue) to carry audio from your TV tuner to your receiver. In order for this feature to work, both the AV receiver and television must be v1.4 compatible.
Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD decoding More Info...
Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD decoding

Dolby TrueHD
The ONKYO TXNR717 has Dolby TrueHD which is a next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. It delivers sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at a bit rate of up to 18 Mbps. It also supports up to 8 full-range channels of 24-bit/96 kHz audio (although TrueHD can support more than 8 channels, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray standards limit it to 8) and extensive metadata including dialogue normalization and dynamic range control all through an HDMI connection. Dolby TrueHD is compatible with existing and future AV amplifiers/receivers.

Dolby Digital Plus
The ONKYO TX-NR717 has Dolby Digital Plus decoding. Dolby Digital Plusis a next-generation audio technology for all high-definition programming and media. Dolby Digital Plus was designed for the delivery formats of the future, but remains fully compatible with all current AV amplifier/receivers. Dolby Digital Plus is capable of supporting data rates of up to 6Mbps and having a bit rate performance of at least 3Mbps on Blu-ray.

DTS-HD
The ONKYO TX-NR717 has DTS-HD which has been selected as an optional audio technology for Blu-Ray Disc and HD-DVD. DTS-HD is a set of extensions to DTS' Coherent Acoustics audio coding system which encompasses DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES 6.1 discrete, DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24. As a mandatory technology in the next generation standards, a DTS decoder will be built into every HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc player. A single DTS-HD data stream on a disc can carry everything from standard DTS 5.1 playable on virtually all existing 280 million plus DTS decoders, all the way to lossless for next-generation systems.
Dolby Pro-Logic IIz decoding More Info...
Dolby Pro-Logic IIz decoding

Dolby Pro-Logic IIz
Taking a 5.1 or 7.1 mix, Dolby ProLogic IIz is able to expand it by creating four new (non-discrete) channels for up to 9.1 surround sound. The system is flexible so you can add new speakers where you want. For example, if you currently have a 5.1 set-up then you can add height channels above your current left and right speakers or you can have them behind you for a more traditional set-up. Of course, you can always have both and take full advantage of what ProLogic IIz has to offer, with 9.1 surround sound.

A standard 5.1 with newly created height speakers as a 7.1 system.

This new 7.1 set-up can then be expanded by adding two further channels as surround sides for 9.1 channels.

Audyssey DSX compatibility

Audyssey DSX
Audyssey DSX can add up to four new (non-discrete) channels to your home cinema. It does this by using an algorithm to find the relevant information in the pre-existing soundstage and then distributing it amongst the new channels. These channels are processed and checked simultaneously for any inconsistencies or potential clashes with the discrete channels. A number of different combinations are possible. Audyssey DSX allows for up to an 11.2 system by adding front width and height speakers to a 7.1 mix.

HDMI video upscaling to 4k with Marvell Qdeo video processing More Info...
HDMI video upscaling to 4k with Marvell Qdeo video processing
Video Upscaling
Video content comes in many different shapes and sizes. A DVD, for example, could come in a 4:3 aspect at 480p whilst a Blu-ray or computer game may come in a 16:9 aspect at 1080i. Thse signals must first be processed by either an A/V receiver or by your television in order to display correctly. In the first instance, when upscaling from 480p to 1080p, an algorithm is used to interpolate the original pixels. The end result is a largely new frame; many of the pixels displayed are an average of those around them. In the second instance, from 1080i to 1080p, the image is simply deinterlaced. This process precedes any upscaling, so if you upscale from 480i to 1080p, it will first be deinterlaced before being upscaled.

Marvell Qdeo
Qdeo is a video processor which seeks to remove any errors inherent in the source and to improve the overall picture quality. It removes noise, artefacts and "jaggies" on a pixel-by-pixel basis to get the very best from the source itself. It then applies contrast enhancement, colour remapper and depth expansion technologies with the aim of achieving a more natural image than previously available.

This rating is a slightly erroneous marketing ploy played by almost all manufacturers, as it is only with one channel driven at 6ohms and at 1kHz. In the real world nobody listens to one channel and at a frequency of just 1kHz.

Audyssey 2EQ room acoustic correction More Info...
Audyssey 2EQ room acoustic correction
2EQ is Audyssey's most basic form of room correction. It is a quick setup utilising three measurements in your room for custom equalisation. Though not as advanced as their MultEQ setup it still aims to improve the sound in a less-than-perfect room for your home cinema. On the TXNR717 this can work in conjunction with Dynamic EQ
Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume More Info...
Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume

Audyssey Dynamic EQ
Dynamic EQ ensures that when you turn down your surround sound, channels don't drop out completely. It calculates the difference between reference and playback level to keep the surround channels in check when the volume is turned down. Using the information collected by MultEQ/XT/XT32, the volume is corrected according to the particular acoustic properties of your room.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume
Soundtracks are often recorded with volume spikes, and switching between sources can lead to big differences in volume; setting the volume at any given time does not take these differences into account. Having Audyssey Dynamic Volume on will set the volume at a steady constant and will increase or decrease depending on the content, ensuring you are not troubled by spiking volume late at night.

Bi-Amping allows you to use any spare amps you have on your A/V Amplifier to get the most out of your front speakers.
